improved quark mass renormalization for a non-perturbative matching of HQET to three-flavor QCD
The use of Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) on the lattice as an approach
to B-physics phenomenology is based on a non-perturbative matching of HQET to
QCD in finite volume. As a first step to apply the underlying strategy in the
three-flavor () theory, we determine the renormalization constant
and improvement coefficients relating the renormalized current and subtracted
quark mass of (quenched) valence quarks in improved
lattice QCD. We present our strategy and first results for the relevant
parameter region towards weak couplings along a line of constant physics, which
corresponds to lattice resolutions fm and fixes the physical
extent of the matching volume to fm.Comment: 7 pages including 7 figures, latex2e; Proceedings of the 36th

The Millennium Galaxy Catalogue: The nearby supermassive black hole mass function
We highlight the correlation between a galaxy's supermassive black hole mass
and the Sersic-index of the host spheroid or bulge component. From our
bulge-disk decompositions of 10 095 galaxies, drawn from the Millennium Galaxy
Catalogue, we construct the local (z < 0.18) mass function of supermassive
black holes. We compare our results to those of McLure & Dunlop (2004) and
conclude that the mass density of supermassive black holes may be marginally
higher than previously supposed. This increase is predominantly due to the
inclusion of low mass and later-type bulges. More details will be presented in
a forthcoming paper.Comment: Contributed article to the Fabulous Destiny of Galaxies meetin
Rainfall or Price Variability: What Determines Rangeland Management Decisions? A Simulation-Optimization Approach to South African Savannas
Savannas cover the greater part of Africa and Australia and almost half of South America and contribute to the livelihoods of more than 350 million people. With the intensification of land use during the second half of the 20th century, savannas have become increasingly degraded through bush encroachment as a consequence of increased grazing pressure. Research on rangeland dynamics, however, provides contradicting answers with regard to the causes and possible remedies of bush encroachment. In this paper we present results from an application of a simulation-optimization model to the case of extensive rangeland management in South Africa. Our model differs from previous approaches in that it explicitly accounts for the influence of stochastic prices and rainfall on economically optimal management decisions. By showing the implications of neglecting price variation and stochasticity in rangeland models we provide new insights with regard to the determinants of bush encroachment and rangeland managers' economic utility. We demonstrate that, in the case of South Africa, optimal rangeland management is likely to lead to bush encroachment that eventually makes livestock holding unprofitable. Yet, we identify the costs of fire management to be a limiting factor for managers to counteract bush encroachment and explore the impact of policy measures to reduce fire control costs on the ecological and economic sustainability of livestock holding.Equilibrium, bio-economic modeling, grassland management, sustainable strategies, stochastic conditions, Livestock Production/Industries, Q57,
Beispielhafte Stallbauten fĂŒr die ökologische Milchviehhaltung
Due to the increasing demand for organic dairy products and the running out of the transitional period of the EG-Regulation on Organic Farming 1804/1999 in the year 2010 many farmers must decide to build new barns. Two examples from Bavaria are given as a prospect of the conception and the development of barn buildings. The cow kennel of KĂŒfner â Naiser is significant for its arrangement of two unroofed yards within the barn. The flat extensive roof planting of the Haneberg barn works as buffer for extreme changes of temperature. It is also remarkable for its sophisticated integra-tion of the existing building into the new conception
The Millennium Galaxy Catalogue: Star counts and the Structure of the Galactic Stellar Halo
We derive a star catalogue generated from the images taken as part of the
37.5 sq. deg Millennium Galaxy Catalogue. These data, alone and together with
colours gained from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release, allow the
analysis of faint star counts (B(MGC) < 20) at high Galactic latitude (41 < b <
63), as a function of Galactic longitude (239 < l < 353). We focus here on the
inner stellar halo, providing robust limits on the amplitude of substructure
and on the large-scale flattening. In line with previous results, the thick
disk, an old, intermediate-metallicity population, is clearly seen in the
colour-magnitude diagram. We find that the Galactic stellar halo within ~10 kpc
(the bulk of the stellar mass) is significantly flattened, with an axial ratio
of (c/a) =0.56 +/- 0.01, again consistent with previous results. Our analysis
using counts-in-cells, angular correlation functions and the Lee 2D statistic,
confirms tidal debris from the Sagittarius dwarf but finds little evidence for
other substructure in the inner halo, at heliocentric distances of < 5 kpc.
This new quantification of the smoothness in coordinate space limits the
contribution of recent accretion/disruption to the build-up of the bulk of the
stellar halo.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (figs 16 and 17 degraded here
CMInject:Python framework for the numerical simulation of nanoparticle injection pipelines
CMInject simulates nanoparticle injection experiments of particles with diameters in the micrometer to nanometer-regime, e.g., for single-particle-imaging experiments. Particle-particle interactions and particle-induced changes in the surrounding fields are disregarded, due to low nanoparticle concentration in these experiments. CMInject's focus lies on the correct modeling of different forces on such particles, such as fluid-dynamics or light-induced interactions, to allow for simulations that further the scientific development of nanoparticle injection pipelines. To provide a usable basis for this framework and allow for a variety of experiments to be simulated, we implemented first specific force models: fluid drag forces, Brownian motion, and photophoretic forces. For verification, we benchmarked a drag-force-based simulation against a nanoparticle focusing experiment. We envision its use and further development by experimentalists, theorists, and software developers.
